Saint George, Martyr and Saint Adalbert, Bishop and Martyr
Optional Memorial
Today is the optional memorial of Saint George, Patron Saint of England. The famous Saint George’s Cross, or red cross with white accents, has become a widely recognized image; symbolic of knighthood and valor for centuries. As Saint George lived in the 4th century, accurate records of his life are hard to verify, but writings exist including legendary medieval feats and heroic public testimonies to a One True God. [1]
Also optional memorial, today we honor Saint Adalbert, Bishop and Martyr. This ‘Apostle of Prussia’ lived in the 10th century and despite much persecution was faithful in ministering in Prague, Hungary, and eventually Prussia. Ultimately, pagan opposition killed this brave man, but not before he was immortalized as the author to the Poles war song entitled, “Boga-Rodzica.” [2]
