November 23, 2017 – St. Peregrine Laziosi Diocesan Shrine. The St. Peregrine Laziosi Diocesan Shrine participated in the celebration of #RedWednesday in solidarity with persecuted Christians worldwide. St. Peregrine Laziosi Diocesan Shrine is one of the 82 cathedrals, basilicas and shrines nationwide that took part in the Red Wednesday celebrations November 22, 2017.
The Eucharistic celebration, presided over by Rev Fr Leonard Ma. Guiang, OSM and joined by the Parish Priest, Rev Fr Pascual Ma. Salas, OSM, started promptly at 6:30 in the evening. On his homily, Fr Guiang raised awareness to the plight of persecuted Christians worldwide citing the martyrdom of Christians, both ancient and of the recent past, including our first Filipino martyr, St. Lorenzo Ruiz.
A video presentation distributed by ACN Philippines was aired after communion to highlight the most recent attacks on Christian communities worldwide. Candles were lit as a moment of silence was observed to honor those who are still facing persecution because of their Christian faith.
#RedWednesday originated in the United Kingdom and this year is the first year that the Philippines has taken part through ACN Philippines (Aid to the Church in Need) and the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).
