Sadly, we share the news of the very unexpected death of our Servite brother Fr Alvin Cabacang, OSM, who died yesterday afternoon in Portland, OR. Fr. Alvin, a member of the St. Peregrine Philippine Vicariate, had been ministering at The Grotto since 2012 and was a much loved member of the Grotto and Portland communities. A memorial Mass will be held at a later date. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

They were already member of a lay group called Servants of Mary and were noted for their special devotion to Our Lady, and for a close adherence to the gospel ideal of fraternal love and service to one another and to others specially the poor and the sick.

The Gospel of the Lord Jesus is the Gospel of Life. It is this Gospel we must preach. It is this Gospel that we must uphold. We therefore unequivocally oppose proposals and moves to return the death penalty into the Philippine legal system. We took a considerable stride in the defense of life when we repealed the Heinous Crimes Act that provided for the death penalty in what were considered “heinous crimes”.

Dear Catholic Faithful, We write this pastoral letter to you with an eye to our celebration of the 500th year of the coming of Christianity to our shores. By 2021 the Christian faith shall have arrived in our shores for half a millennium already. For a long time we have been the only Asian country with a Christian majority. And even today we can thankfully say that we are the Asian country with the biggest Christian population. This is the second GA since the installation of Rev. Fr. Joel Ma. Morata as parish priest. Building on the vital message of building good, human, and fraternal relationships in the parish, Fr. Morata expressed his keen interest to get to know his flock. He also revealed more of himself by sharing the story of his journey so far as a priest – from the time of his ordination to his present parish assignment. He also took the opportunity to recap key interventions made to improve the Eucharistic celebrations and the administration of the parish as a whole, and shared his observations of the parish workers and his expectations from them – among which is discipline in service. He also emphasized that a key priority this year is the development of the BEC program.

Read MoreFather in heaven,
May the faith you have given us in your son, Jesus Christ, our brother, and the flame of charity enkindled in our hearts by the Holy Spirit, reawaken in us the blessed hope for the coming of your Kingdom.
May your grace transform us into tireless cultivators of the seeds of the Gospel.
May those seeds transform from within both humanity and the whole cosmos in the sure expectation of a new heaven and a new earth, when, with the powers of Evil vanquished, your glory will shine eternally.
May the grace of the Jubilee reawaken in us, Pilgrims of Hope, a yearning for the treasures of heaven.
May that same grace spread the joy and peace of our Redeemer throughout the earth.
To you, our God, eternally blessed, be glory and praise forever. Amen.
